Jajah, a third party application developer for Twitter have revealed that their beta of Jajah@call will become available later this week. The service will allow users to make free internet calls similar to those processes such as Skype. With the service arriving on Twitter before social networking rival Facebook, if it succeeds it could prove a huge leap for the future of Twitter and it’s fight against rival competitors.
Using both a Twitter account and a Jajah account, users will be able to make Voice over IP (VoIP) calls to friends, family, and other Twitterers. Being released in its beta form this week, individuals will be required to type ‘@call@username’, initiating a voice call to friends within the network.
Expressing that the beta voice calls would be “the verbal equivalent of a tweet”, the first calls provided by the service will be up to two minutes in length. However, this is far better than the 140 characters that can be used to tweet and if a success it is expected that the final version of Jajah@call will provide far longer conversations. In addition, the application is designed to work with a range of devices including iPhones and the normal desktop PC.
Meanwhile, Facebook are hot on the heels of Twitter. Currently planning their own version of a VoIP application, a third party developer is currently building the integrated free chat service called Vivox.
