Intel Predict Massive TV Future

Intel’s chief technology officer has predicted that in the future there will be over 12 billion pieces of hardware able to connect to billions of hours of television. Speaking in San Francisco at Intel’s Developer Forum Justin Rattner said “TV will remain at the centre of our lives and you will be able to watch what you want where you want. We are talking about more than one TV-capable device for every man and woman on the planet.”

He explained that with the world’s growing video and television content, its success lay in the development of devices such as laptops and mobiles on which to watch it.

Meanwhile vice president of Cisco Malachy Moynihan said “We are seeing an amazing move of video to IP (internet) networks. By 2013 90% of all IP traffic will be video; 60% of all video will be consumed by consumers over IP networks.”

In addition to the predictions that television would remain huge in the future, Intel’s digital home group boss Eric Kim warned that developers needed to “keep it simple and easy”. “Don’t make my TV act like a PC. This is what we hear consistently from the consumer, “he explained, adding “The key challenge is how to bring the power and richness of the internet but keep it TV simple.”

Ending his speech with discussion on the 3D future, Mr Rattner thrilled the audience by holding a conversation with a projected 3D image of his colleague who was standing in the hall. He explained that whilst today it took 50 copper cables to produce the Light Peak technology, it may one day be replaced by a single fibre. “The old TV world is fading fast and the future is here,” he exclaimed.
