iPhone Hacker Reveals PS3 Hack

A US hacker who managed to decode Apple’s iPhone has revealed that he has unlocked the coding to the PS3 in just five weeks. The last of the games consoles to have not been subject to hacking, George Hotz said that the unlocking of the code allowed for pirate games to be played upon machines and that though he was still refining the hack, he would soon post the details online.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Hotz explained “It’s supposed to be unhackable – but nothing is unhackable. I can now do whatever I want with the system. It’s like I’ve got an awesome new power – I’m just not sure how to wield it.” Describing the system as “very secure”, Mr Hotz spent three weeks last summer attempting to break the coding before taking a break. Revealing that another two weeks had uncovered a “5% hardware and 95% software” hack he added “you can use hardware to inject an insecurity and then you build on that.”

Whilst hacking consoles allows the use of pirated games use, Mr Hotz expressed that his motivation was based purely on “curiosity.” However, the gaming industry does not take hacking, or the playing of pirated games lightly. Only last month users of Xbox Live who had modified their consoles found themselves disconnected by Microsoft.

As a spokesman from Sony said “We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information”, Mr Hotz warned that his hack could cause particular difficulties for Sony in their attempt to create a patch.
