Microsoft Concerned Over Cloud Security

Microsoft has called on the government to tighten laws regarding cyber-attacks and computer fraud as an increasing number of business take to cloud computing. Talking at the Cloud Computing for Business and Society’s forum at Brooklyn Institution, senior vice president Brad Smith explained “We also need government to modernize the laws, adapt them to the cloud, and adopt new measures to protect privacy and promote security. There is no doubt that the future holds even more opportunities than the present, but it also contains critical challenges that we must address now if we want to take full advantage of the potential of cloud computing.”

Surveying 200 IT executives, 200 senior business leaders and 700 members of the general public in December 2009 regarding cloud computing, Mr Smith revealed that excitement over cloud developments was high, with 86per cent of business leaders, and 58per cent of the public, looking forward to it. However, 90per cent of all questioned individuals expressed concerns over security and privacy of data.

Responding to the survey results, Mr Smith then stated that he believed a Cloud Computing Advancement Act should be created by the US government, allowing for consumers to be protected by laws. He added that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and Electronic Communications Privacy Act needed updating to protect people in the modern world, whilst setting up a transparent, educational format for the cloud so that individuals knew how the cloud system worked.
