Officials at Sony have revealed that further to 3D specifications coming to their home cinema line, they are to introduce firmware for the next generation visuals to their gaming console the Playstation. Revealing that the upgrade would come to the PlayStation 3 later this year, Sony’s director of hardware marketing John Koller said that the developmental process had already begun and PS3 users would see updates in the summer.
As the battle to heats up for companies to expand their electronics ranges into 3D compatible versions, Sony announced that at approximately the same time that their new 3D TV and home cinema ranges hit consumer shelves, their gaming console would also feature the latest technology. Explaining that the next generation in visuals continued to be a main priority for 2010, Mr Koller said “3D is a major part of our initiatives in 2010 and we’re currently developing 3D stereoscopic games to come in conjunction with the launch of Sony’s 3D compatible Bravia LCD TV in summer 2010. The amazing thing about the PS3’s technology is that all PS3 units that exist in homes and markets will be able to play 3D stereoscopic games as well as 3D BD movies through separate firmware upgrades – something that other platforms are unable to do.”
Due to be released this summer, upgrading by way of firmware will ensure that all PS3 users can benefit from the product, opening a new expansive gaming market for Sony.
