Google have been busy, and in addition to their launch of the Nexus One, and their announcement that they are to begin trials as a broadband provider, the internet giant has revealed a new social networking service named Buzz. Working in conjunction with their Gmail facility, Buzz can be accessed from mobile phones and allows picture sharing, status updates, and web link sharing.
As the almost unheard of Orkut, Google’s social networking site, gets left behind as users flock to Twitter and Facebook, a spokesperson for the company expressed that their latest offering enabled users quick and simple updates without “too much information” that is often seen with other websites. With 176.5 million hits on their Gmail service in December alone, Buzz could quickly prove a hit if successful with users. Automatically following individuals that users email and talk to frequently, updates, links to websites, YouTube video’s and more can be shared both privately and publicly.
Meanwhile the service will also be available through mobile phones, using geo-location to offer buzz posts which are emanate from near the user. Product manager of both Google Buzz and Gmail, Todd Jackson, said “In today’s world of status messages, tweets and update streams, it’s increasingly tough to sort through it all, much less engage in meaningful conversations. Our belief is that organizing the social information on the web — finding relevance in the noise — has become a large-scale challenge, one that Google’s experience in organizing information can help solve.”
