It has been revealed that Microsoft are due to make last ditch attempts to conquer the mobile phone market. After initial success in the smartphone sector with their windows mobile platform they were quickly out competed by Apple and RIM’s technology. In reports that the computer giant is due to reveal Windows Mobile 7 Charles Golvin, Forrester analysts said “This is kind of their last chance. If Windows Mobile doesn’t get it right this time around, they’re probably toast.”
Speaking at the world’s largest mobile phone trades show, Mobile World Congress, on Monday, CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer is expected to announce their latest attempt to conquer a market which has so far evaded them. Famous for staying with projects until they solve the problem, the latest platform is expected to be far more simplified than previous issues, focusing more on customer like their Zune HD media player. However, they have a lot of ground to make up as they saw market share fall in 2009 from 13.2per cent to 9per cent, partly due to Google’s Android system creating the high impact that it did.
Meanwhile experts are also questioning Microsoft’s capability of being able to sell its mobile platform. Whilst having to sell PC software hasn’t been a problem for the company, selling a phone platform in a market where both Symbian and Android are free for manufacturers and open to modification could prove particularly difficult. And with Nokia and Google hoping that this ploy will steer users to their services, it remains to be seen whether Microsoft can make the enough impact to remain viable in a highly competitive market such as mobile phone platforms.
