WordPress.com has reported that a malfunction in one of their core router’s was the reason behind a network shortage which left millions of blogs offline for up to two hours. Estimating that approximately 5.5 million page hits would have been lost due to the outage, a spokesperson for the company explained that the glitch at one of its central data providers “broke the site.”
One of the most popular and widely used blog platforms, WordPress.com is used by companies and individuals alike as a tool to reach the internet masses. Expressing that it was the “worst downtime in four years,” founder of the firm Matt Mullenweg added “I know this sucked for you guys as much as it did for us — the entire team was on pins and needles trying to get your blogs back as soon as possible. I hope it will be much longer than four years before we face a problem like this again.” He added that personal information safe, denying that the company had been subject to a cyber attack and adding “All of your data was safe and secure, we just couldn’t serve it.”
Whilst there could have been an adverse reaction to the hit, most individuals seemed unusually forgiving of the outage, expressing on the WordPress.com site that they welcomed Mr Mullenweg’s transparency at the time of the problem. However, GigaOm.com’s Liz Gannes expressed that though users were forgiving this time, “people won’t be so friendly if it happens again.”
