A number of experts have revealed that the real fuel behind the smartphone’s rise to iconic status is largely due to companies allowing open source coding for their platforms. Whilst analysts expect that mobile devices will begin outselling PCs in just a few years, they warned that open source coding was the fuel of the industry, allowing developers to make continuous upgrades, and without it the phenomenon would soon come toppling down.
However, whilst their warning may affect Microsoft who is due to take another stab at the market with their Windows Mobile which isn’t free, Google’s Android and the Symbian and LiMo platforms are already open to developers to take and do as they will with. Even the iconic Apple iPhone uses many variations of open source software, a revelation which shows just how important coding can be.
Of course, though the fuel behind the fire, experts are also warning that there are obvious pitfalls to developers, in particular the possibility of decreasing standard as open source coding continues to become available across platforms. Any number of flaws or defaults could cause huge financial losses to firms, so ensuring that only the best code is used remains highly important. The recent recession has already weighed upon many companies, causing cost cutting exercises and it is to be hoped that any code’s standard hasn’t been diluted by error and corner cutting regimes. However, as the modern world continues to spin at a seemingly increasing pace, open source coding seems to be the only reason that mobile platform technology remains able to keep up.
