Later in 2010, smart TVs will be available in the market and Intel is sure it would be as remarkable as the industry’s first switch to coloured screens.

Intel Chief Paul Otellini, who spoke at the annual investors’ day, said that a wide range of new devices would be embedded in the Atom processor’s next generation, which would include the smart TV.

Highlighting the promise of the new transmission, Otellini mentioned its ability to programme the entertainment box with the use of a standard operating system, which could be packed with additional features and applications.

“The TV revolution we’re about to go through is the biggest change since the move to colour”, said Otellini.

“The usage model is going to fundamentally shift with the new capabilities of the platform”.

According to him, older television sets have about a million lines of code that run in one device, while smart televisions would provide 10 times higher amounts and around three-fold faster computing performance that would definitely enhance the quality of viewing.

Eric Kim, Intel’s senior vice president for its digital home group, said that the television would take a new form in a matter of one year.

The operating system of the TV would be based on Linux to support OpenGL and Flash graphics. There would also be built-in systems to protect stored data.

The company is looking forward to shipping nearly 30% of its products into the embedded systems market.

Intel says that China will be the new top chip consumer in the world by 2014, exceeding the demand of the US.

Although the global financial crisis continues to storm the economies of many countries, climbing to the surface of demands in terms of tech services and hardware supplies are Russia, Brazil and China. Due to this, new purchasing patterns have been seen by industry players, prompting them to come up with new ways in dealing with such novel market behaviours.

In an interview with the Web site V3.co.uk, Intel’s sales and marketing manager Tom Kilroy said that by 2014, China would stand out as the biggest purchaser of chips across the globe. However, existing figures show the US as the current no. 1.

“Brazil will jump to the number three consumer, leapfrogging France and Germany, and that’ll happen in this year in my opinion, or definitely by 2011”, said Kilroy.

Russia, Brazil and China are lately showing positive progress in their markets, while maintaining high levels of investment and consumption. He said that China was rolling out enormous spending on infrastructure towards the western parts. Large spending was also present in Russia’s breakdown, he added.

This, according to him, was due to occurrences that called for such expenditure. Such is for Russia, which recently saw a number of terrorist attacks. As a measure to counter similar incidences, the government of Russia set up 200,000 cameras to monitor its subway system. A single camera stores about 2TB of monthly data. These data will go through next stages involving storage and analysis, which means more spending for the country.

Generally, the tech market has remained consistent even when the recession struck the global economy, incurring a 19% boost.

Computer chip firm Intel have revealed that they can now make their Atom chips run Google’s operating system Android. Carefully designed chips which are low powered and developed to be integrated into netbooks and smartphones, it marks an important development for the industry which, until now, saw the majority of mobile phone chips produced by UK based company Arm.

Revealing the significant development, Intel’s software and services group general manager, Renee James, said “Intel is enabling all OSes for Atom phones.” Adding that Atom’s were already running Android in several instances, Mr James said that a number of companies had already shown interest in applying the development.

In particular the announcement is likely to spell positive news for Google, who have been attempting to entice Apple into using their Android system on devices such as the new iPad. In addition, whilst the system is currently mainly used in smartphones, Intel’s development will almost certainly allow Google to push the boundaries of the products that they can take a stake in, allowing both firms to push beyond their current technological boundaries.

Intel is not however the first firm to have managed to get the Android OS working on such a chip. Acer has already proved the capabilities, incorporating such components into their netbooks, whilst the chip company MIPS has utilised the technology in media players, set-top boxes and digital picture frames. It does however bring the developments into the hands of technology giants, creating possible great success if the phenomenon of netbooks and tablet PCs proceeds as industry experts believe.

Google have revealed that, in their attempt to access individuals through yet another medium, they have joined up with both Intel and Sony in a bid to create a set-top box which would allow TVs access to the internet. Making a move on a market which could fundamentally change the way that people use their TVs, a ‘Google TV’ product has already been built as a prototype, with many expressing that it is the next logical step for the home entertainment system.

It is not the first time that companies have tried to crack this possibly lucrative and technologically advanced market. Apple is just one of previous firms to make attempts at increasing the way that TVs could be used to access the internet, but until now features have been limited to downloading entertainment shows or films. However, with reporters expressing that there was even talk that ‘Google TV’ may even be built into television sets and other devices themselves, it seems as if latest developments may come to fruition.

Believed to be working alongside technology developer and manufacturer Logitech, an insider said “Google wants to be everywhere the Internet is so they can put ads there.” And with a vast array of business links in different sectors, Google’s gaining dominance is only increasing in momentum. Meanwhile, with experts expressing that the device would likely be powered by Intel chips on an Android system, the only other question is whether Google are looking for global dominance with the product or a simple U.S launch as with many of their other devices.

Intel may have brought humanlike computer intelligence a step closer with its fully programmable 48-core processor. The chip contains no less than 1.3 billion transistors (the tiny ‘on/off’ switches underpinning silicon technology) in a ‘Single Chip Cloud Computer’ (SCCC), succeeding Intel’s 80-core ‘Polaris’ chip, launched in 2007. The terminology is significant: the architecture resembles a cluster of computers such as you’d find in a cloud – it is, in effect, a microcosm of a cloud data centre. This new microprocessor’s 48 cores are the most Intel Architecture has ever incorporated onto a single chip. Unlike Polaris, the SCCC can run the standard software of the x86 Intel chips in the Pentium and Core models. The 48 cores are configured as 24 dual-core “tiles” connected to an ultra high-speed mesh network.

Intel believes that SCC computers provide an ideal research platform to help catalyse multi-core software research. The company claims that they will have sufficient capacity collectively to be able to understand the world around them as humans do – seeing, hearing and even speaking. The high-speed ‘mesh’ network in the SCC design allows each of the 48 cores to communicate with others and with the four linked memory controllers with minimal delay. How much memory could a computer based on the chip accommodate? A thumping 64GB! But there’s more: Intel is informing programmers to get ready for computers with thousands of processing cores. Maybe James Cameron’s Terminator movies are not so far-fetched after all.

Computer chip giant Intel has revealed the latest product to their range, a device able to translate written text into audio. Aimed at those who have reading disabilities such as dyslexia, and those that are vision impaired, the Reader, as it is known, will hit shelves on November 17th.

Previously unveiled in the states, the Reader has an estimated retail value of £1000. Its breaks previous conforms where specialist devices were made by specific smaller companies, rather than computer giants such as Intel. Approximately the size of a standard paperback book, the Reader uses an Intel Atom processor, along with a small camera, to translate text on the tablet into an audio form for the consumer.

Developed by dyslexic user Ben Foss, he explained “As someone who is part of the dyslexic community, I am thrilled to be able to help level the playing field for people who, like me, do not have easy access to the printed word.” He added that “The Intel Reader is a tool that can help give people with dyslexia, low-vision and blindness – or other reading-based disabilities – access to the resources they need to be successful in school, work and life.” It is estimated that up to eight million people within the UK could benefit from the device, two million individuals with eyesight problems, and a further six million who suffer from dyslexia.

Meanwhile the chief executive of the British Dyslexia Association, Judi Stewart, welcomed the device saying “This device has the potential to offer a great deal of independence to people who have a difficulty with reading.”

Following a lawsuit where they were fined $1.5bn by the European Competition Authorities, Intel has had a new suit brought against them by the New York attorney general. Whilst appealing the conviction in Europe, Intel has been accused of using “illegal threats” to coerce manufacturers in the computer industry into buying from them instead of rivals.

Under investigation for two years, Andrew Cuomo explained that the anti-competition federal lawsuit had been brought against Intel for their use of “bribery and coercion”. Meanwhile Intel released a statement saying the “decision to file suit against (us) is just plain wrong. Neither consumers, who have consistently benefited from lower prices and increased innovation, nor justice, are being served by the decision to file a case now.”

However, Mr Cuomo explained that Intel had been partaking in a “worldwide, systematic campaign of illegal conduct”. He said “Rather than compete fairly, Intel used bribery and coercion to maintain a stranglehold on the market. Intel’s actions not only unfairly restricted potential competitors, but also hurt average consumers who were robbed of better products and lower prices.” Additionally Mr Cuomo revealed that the details had come to light through the exchange of emails, saying that “in some years billions” had been used to payoff manufactures. If companies were “perceived to be working too closely with Intel’s competitors” payoffs were then withdrawn.

Mr Cuomo had stated a “strong case” said the Computer and Communications Industry Associations president Ed Black who said “The quicker Intel owns up to its actions the quicker it, and the entire computer industry, can move on.”

Intel’s chief technology officer has predicted that in the future there will be over 12 billion pieces of hardware able to connect to billions of hours of television. Speaking in San Francisco at Intel’s Developer Forum Justin Rattner said “TV will remain at the centre of our lives and you will be able to watch what you want where you want. We are talking about more than one TV-capable device for every man and woman on the planet.”

He explained that with the world’s growing video and television content, its success lay in the development of devices such as laptops and mobiles on which to watch it.

Meanwhile vice president of Cisco Malachy Moynihan said “We are seeing an amazing move of video to IP (internet) networks. By 2013 90% of all IP traffic will be video; 60% of all video will be consumed by consumers over IP networks.”

In addition to the predictions that television would remain huge in the future, Intel’s digital home group boss Eric Kim warned that developers needed to “keep it simple and easy”. “Don’t make my TV act like a PC. This is what we hear consistently from the consumer, “he explained, adding “The key challenge is how to bring the power and richness of the internet but keep it TV simple.”
